Well, I've had this idea for some time now, but sometimes it takes an event or two, or a slap in the face to really get you going...So here it goes...
You know, the country is on the verge of electing its first Black president. Whatever race you are, tell me...DID YOU SEE THIS COMING?
I'm willing to bet that you didn't. Sure, you may have believed that it would happen one day, but surely not in your lifetime. Yet, along comes Barack Obama out thinking, out campaigning, and...get this...outfundraising one of the most powerful political families in this country.
So, I've been thinking...how many young black kids might now be instilled with the belief that they can be President one day? For once, the media has been FORCED to cover a positive, powerful black man and, outside of a little Reverend Wright propaganda, forced to cover him in a positive light. The constant media coverage surely will get some kids to thinking, "Hey, it's not impossible. I can do that!", right?
See, life is all about exposure and how you build upon what you've been exposed to. Don't believe me? Well, if you take a new born black child and ship him on Air China over to Beijing, I bet you he will be the most Chinese speaking black person you've ever seen. We are products of our environment.
The problem is, most of our environments haven't been very positive. How do you know that you can be a successful attorney if you've never seen anyone do it? A doctor? A businessman? The president?
We know that we can be rappers, actors, athletes and singers. We see evidence of that every second. Heck, we even learned over the past few years that we can be golfers and tennis players. But we haven't had an outlet to tell the largely hidden stories of those that have found success away from the stage, the court and the field.
Until now....Stay tuned.
